Motivational Interviewing Training for Beginners

Attendees at this three-day training will learn foundational Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills and engage in 2-3 different exercises, per skill domain, to reinforce learning. Concepts include:

  • the Spirit of MI;
  • the four processes of MI;
  • values work;
  • assessing client communication (sustain talk, change talk, discord);
  • open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries (OARS);
  • and the establishment of a change plan.

The training will include large and small group exercises, teach-backs, and real-play OARS practice sessions. Attendees will use a simple coding tool to establish a reflection to open-ended question ratio for each member of their assigned real-play group.

Motivational Interviewing: Day 1

During this training, participants will:

  1. Identify 1 time they used the Righting Reflex without success.
  2. Be able to synthesize the spirit of Motivational Interviewing.
  3. Be able to differentiate between sustain talk, discord, and change talk.

Motivational Interviewing: Day 2

During this training, participants will:

  1. Engage in 1 teach-back review of Day 1.
  2. Be able to identify 2 OARS skills they would like to implement in the next 30 days.
  3. Participate in at least 1 real-play breakout group and establish a reflection to open-ended question ratio for another group member.

Motivational Interviewing: Day 3

During this training, participants will:

  1. Engage in 1 teach-back review of Day 2.
  2. Be able to identify the Four Processes of MI.
  3. Establish a change plan in a real-play breakout group.

This complimentary training is open to CalAIM Training Program participants, as well as all members and affiliates interested in Motivational Interviewing. 

Instructor Biography:

Sarah Solis, LCSW, Director of Seeds of Change Consulting, has 17 years of experience providing care to clients impacted by trauma. She is currently employed as a Clinical Case Manager at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Sarah has worked in corrections, community mental health outpatient and day treatment programs, medical social work, and community-based services for children and families. Sarah has experience providing direct service and clinical supervision, and worked as a program manager for many years. The majority of Sarah’s experience has been working with under-resourced populations. Cultural humility and responsiveness are an important element in her work. She participates in regular cultural humility work groups and facilitates trainings to address oppressive practices in clinical settings. Sarah has been training for 15 years and completed the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) training program. She remains an active member.
