SNAP NPRM: Comment Period Re-Opening April 8th – 10th!

The US Department of Agriculture has issued  a proposed a rule that would impose harsh time limits on many more SNAP (CalFresh here in CA) participants. SNAP’s time limit applies to able bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs), childless adults aged 18 to 49 who are unemployed or underemployed (working less than 20 hours/week). The proposed rule would eliminate the flexibility states have always had to waive time limits on SNAP in areas with insufficient jobs for low-income workers. USDA estimates that under the proposed rule, 755,000 SNAP participants would be newly subject to the time limit, meaning if they can’t find, maintain and prove employment of 20 hours per week, they will only be eligible for three months of SNAP benefits over three years. Find additional resources on SNAP and the proposed rule here.

In recognition of technical issues that prevented some comments from being posted to the Federal Register, USDA will re-open the comment period for the SNAP Time Limit Rule changes from Monday, April 8th through Wednesday, April 10th. If you weren’t able to submit comments previously, there’s still time!

Take Action: Download the health sector template comment letter here. Edit at least one third of the language to provide information about your organization and the importance of food assistance to your patients and their families. Submit your comments here between April 8 and April 10.
