My Co-Worker Smokes. What Policies Protect Me from Thirdhand Smoke in the Workplace?

This training will review the importance of adopting a 100% smoke-free policy as well as implementing a cessation protocol (Ask, Advise and Refer). Secondly, the training will discuss how secondhand and thirdhand smoke affects clinic staff and patients. Thirdly, we will go over the different policy templates that can be utilized by clinics. Finally, the training will discuss cessation resources for all California residents and how clinics can refer clients to free cessation counseling.

During this training, participants will:

• Learn about the Compadres For Tobacco-Free Los Angeles County project and how to access cessation resources
• Review the importance of implementing a 100% smoke-free policy
• Learn about the effects of secondhand and thirdhand smoke in the workplace
• Review smoke-free policies and cessation protocols (Ask, Advise and Refer) as well as how to conduct a cessation referral

Instructor Biographies:

Adriana Sanchez, Advocacy Manager, Worksite Wellness LA.

Adriana Sanchez has been working in Public Health for over 24 years and during this time, she worked on numerous school district and community health organizations throughout Los Angeles County. Adriana’s most recent work is with Worksite Wellness LA-Compadres for Tobacco Free Los Angeles County where she serves as an Advocacy Manager. The Compadres for Tobacco Free Los Angeles County project is funded by the California Tobacco Control Program (CTCP) which is a program of the California Department of Public Health. The goal of the Compadres for Tobacco-Free Los Angeles County project is to eliminate tobacco-related disparities and increase health equity among the Hispanic/Latinx priority population in Los Angeles County through a regional approach. Adriana has been working to educate community health clinics on the importance of having a 100% smoke free environment in the workplace, policy adoption, and cessation protocol.

Lydia Greiner, DrPH, APRN, Center Coordinator, Thirdhand Smoke Resource Center, San Diego State University.

Dr. Lydia Greiner is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, an Adjunct Professor of Psychology in the College of Sciences at San Diego State University, and the Coordinator of the Thirdhand Smoke Resource Center (thirdhandsmoke.org). Dr. Greiner has more than 20 years of experience working with underserved communities in the US and abroad using a community-based participatory approach to address environmental health concerns. In addition to coordinating the Resource Center, Dr. Greiner is Co-PI of the California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP) funded project, Imperial Valley Youth for a Tobacco Free Environment, which examines citizen science as a strategy to engage communities in tobacco-related research.

Georg E. Matt, PhD, Director, Thirdhand Smoke Resource Center, San Diego State University.

Dr. Georg E. Matt is a Professor of Psychology in the College of Sciences at San Diego State University. Dr. Matt’s research examines human exposure to tobacco smoke toxicants in real-world field settings a​nd strategies to protect nonsmokers from the exposure to tobacco smoke toxicants in secondhand and thirdhand smoke. Dr. Matt is a member of the California Thirdhand Smoke Research Consortium, where he directs the Thirdhand Smoke Dissemination, Outreach, and Resource Center (thirdhandsmoke.org). Funded by the California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP), the Consortium is a multi-institutional and interdisciplinary effort involving research groups from the University of California San Francisco, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of California Riverside, San Diego State University, and the University of Southern California
