Introduction to Community Health Centers: An Onboarding Resource for New CHC Staff

The Onboarding Training is a 2-part training designed as a tool to support HR managers and supervisors introducing new and recently hired health center staff to general health center operations, including: the history and movement, funding streams, customer service, social drivers of health, compliance, and quality improvement. Training participants will leave the training with baseline knowledge of health center operations and resources to assist in their learning and development.

By the end of the training participants will:

  • Gain general knowledge on the history and development of community health centers.
  • Understand general community health center operations and functions.
  • Learn how community health centers are essential to their communities.
  • Learn how health centers are implementing Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
  • Learn about the resources available to them as new community health center employees.

Instructor Biographies:

Alexander Gil, Assistant Director of Workforce, CCALAC 

Alexander Gil is CCALAC’s Assistant Director of Workforce and has been at CCALAC for five years. He has over nine years of experience developing programs and pipeline initiatives for students and job-seekers in the non-profit sector. During his time at CCALAC, Alexander has helped developed four workforce pipeline programs including: AmeriCorps Health Fellows, AHEC Scholars, FNP Residency program and most recently the Allied Health Internship program. Alexander oversees CCALAC’s Human Resources Roundtable, Job Board, and Resume Bank and has a vast understanding of the workforce needs of CCALAC’s members. He is a graduate of the 2020 Cedar Sinai Managing to Leading Program and was recently appointed the South Los Angeles AHEC (Area Health Education Center) Director. 

Andrés Sánchez, MSOL, Workforce Program Manager, CCALAC 

Andres Sanchez, MSOL is CCALAC’s Workforce Program Manager. They have nine years of experience in community health and 20 years of experience working with under-resourced populations in Las Vegas, DC, and Los Angeles in the areas of health education, child development, HIV care, crisis intervention, housing, and case management. Andres has been at CCALAC for three years, supporting workforce initiatives such as the AHEC Scholars pipeline program, CREW, the CCALAC job board, the job board and recruitment newsletters, and coordinating medical assistant trainings. Andres has a certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and has supported the CCALAC Training Center in the delivery of this training for CCALAC member clinic staff. 

Cristal Torres, Member Services Project Coordinator, CCALAC 

Cristal is CCALAC’s Member Services Project Coordinator. She has been with CCALAC for four years, where she is actively engaged in the ongoing development of CCALAC’s workforce-related recruitment and retention projects as well as CCALAC’s Training Center initiatives. Throughout her role, she has worked on projects such as the CCALAC Workforce & Recruitment newsletter, Onboarding Training, CREW., Community Health Career Pathways, and CCALAC pipeline webinars. She is now leading the Allied Health Internship Program where she hopes to expose the next generation of allied health professionals to community health. The majority of Cristal’s experience has been working with community-based organization that address the social drivers of health and promote health equity. Cristal is a very driven and passionate individual who studied psychobiology and minored in Chicanx Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. Cristal continues to grow in her role and health care career where she plans to support her Angeleno community by advocating and promoting community health.
