Human Trafficking Education for Providers and Community Health Center Staff
February 21 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
$25.00The Human Trafficking Response Program at CommonSpirit Health® will share trainings created to educate health professionals about human trafficking and how to provide trauma-informed care and services to patients and families impacted by abuse, neglect, or violence. Human Trafficking 101 covers basic information about human trafficking, including potential red flags in health care settings. Trauma-Informed Patient Care and Services introduces the topic of trauma and the importance of a trauma-informed approach in health care settings. The training will include a presentation on PEARR, which represents five key steps for providing victim assistance to patients in a trauma-informed manner: Provide privacy, Educate, Ask, Respect and Respond. In addition, a survivor will discuss the impact of the Survivor Advocate program in the Los Angeles region and how community health centers and clinics can access the resource to serve their patients.
By participating in this course, community health center professionals will be able to:
- Define human trafficking, recognize misconceptions often associated with this type of violence, identify susceptible populations to experiencing trafficking, and take action to prevent trafficking and respond to victims appropriately.
- Describe the prevalence and widespread impact of trauma, recognize signs and symptoms of traumatic stress, including secondary traumatic stress, and respond in meaningful ways.
- Utilize the PEARR steps to educate patients about abuse, neglect and violence, including human trafficking, assist patients with referrals to private and public community agencies, and access resources and tools (e.g., brochures and safety cards) that can assist with this process.
Presented by Kit G. Katz, Director of Community Health and Staff of CommonSpirit Health ®, St. Mary Medical Center.
