Health Center Best Practices for Colorectal Cancer Screening

Complimentary for CCALAC MembersThe Colorectal Cancer Screening webinar discusses the importance of screening, reviews new screening recommendations and best practices, and includes presentations from Los Angeles County clinics on screening implementation at their respective centers. Resources from CCALAC and the American Cancer Society will be provided.
As a result of attending this training, attendees will:
- Receive an overview of colorectal cancer and the importance of screening patients as well as new screening recommendations;
- Learn about disparities related to colorectal cancer and workflows that have been proven to successfully address those disparities;
- Hear implementable best practices from clinics to improve colorectal cancer screening rates.

Zuri A. Murrell, M.D., Los Angeles Colorectal Surgeon & Specialist
Zuri A. Murrell, M.D. is a leading Los Angeles Colorectal Surgeon & Specialist. Dr. Murrell is board certified in colorectal and general surgery. He has practices located in Beverly Hills & Los Alamitos, California – lacolonrectalsurgeon.com – and over 40 publications including scientific book articles and book chapters. He was the director of the Colorectal Cancer program at Cedars-Sinai Medical from 2010-2018. Dr. Murrell specializes in colon cancer, rectal cancer, hemorrhoids, Crohn’s Disease, colitis, IBD treatment, and colonoscopies. He is the developer of Anal Rejuvenation™. Dr. Murrell is also an inventor scientist who holds a patent for a novel anorectal cream. He enjoys educating the community on cancer prevention through nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle by giving lively, interactive, and motivating educational seminars. He has educated audiences on television (The Doctors, Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family, Telemundo, and various public service campaigns).
Joanna Quintanilla, CHES, CLE, Program Coordinator, Northeast Valley Health Corporation.
Joanna Quintanilla, CHES, CLE is the Program Coordinator for the Colorectal Cancer Project at Northeast Valley Health Corporation (NEVHC). In addition to the CCP project, she works within the Quality Improvement department and oversee all activities related to Colorectal Cancer for all health centers through activities such as the F.I.T kit distribution workflow, providing staff trainings, implementation of new workflows to improve screening rates, strategizing with care teams on increasing F.I.T kit completion rates, etc. Joanna graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Public Health, and is currently pursuing a Master of Public Health (MPH) with an emphasis on Community Health Education at California State University, Northridge (CSUN).
Deanna Newman, Quality Manager, Los Angeles LGBT Center
Deanna is the Quality Manager at the Los Angeles LGBT Center. She’s a passionate advocate for high-quality healthcare with over 5 years of experience working in community health. Deanna has successfully implemented several initiatives focused on improving patient care and population health outcomes. She completed her master’s degree in public administration at California State University, Northridge, and is a certified Kaiser Permanente Improvement Advisor.
Kat Lopez, Quality Coordinator, Los Angeles LGBT Center
Kat has been working at the LA LGBT Center as a Quality Coordinator for a year and a half and completed their bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Queer Studies at California State University, Northridge. Their education led them to explore work in Applied Behavior Analysis. This hands-on experience of applying interventions, assessing outcomes, and re-adjusting interventions gave Kat the foundation to begin their career in Quality Improvement. Kat prefers to work in environments in which they can see positive outcomes of their efforts in the community they serve. Currently, Kat’s main focus at the LA LGBT Center is monitoring and improving Cervical Cancer Screening and Colorectal Cancer Screening measures.
