Voting in a Pandemic
September 15 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pmFree
In LA County, community clinics and health centers are in a unique position to support voter registration and engagement because they are trusted messengers who have deep ties to the communities they serve.
This training will provide clinic staff with information to help them support and empower patients to make their voices heard through voting. The training will include education methods and techniques for registering voters and voter engagement, discussion of changes to the voting process here in LA County, and FAQs related to the November General Election.
The training will also inform participants on best practices to vote safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic and will answer questions such as—What is the safest way to vote if I’m scared of contracting COVID-19? How and when will I get my ballot? Will my vote count if I vote by mail? Should I return my Vote by Mail ballot via USPS or at a local Vote Center?
Additionally, AltaMed Health Services will present on their 5-Touch Health Center Toolkit: Conducting Voter Outreach during COVID-19 (which includes ways community health centers (CHCs) can conduct in-clinic voter education and outreach), lessons learned from Voting Solutions for All People (VSAP) partnership with Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office from the March 2020 Primary Election, plans for November 2020 General Election VSAP partnership, Get Out the Vote (GOTV) campaign, and how LA County’s CHCs can incorporate AltaMed’s tips and best practices into their own civic engagement work.
By the end of the session participants will be able to:
- Support patients and community members with voter registration
- Provide patients with a snapshot of the voting process in LA County and answer questions related to mail-in ballots
- Share best practices and tips for voting safely during the COVID-19 pandemic
- Learn how LA County’s CHCs can further engage their patient population in civic engagement efforts
